With the recent re-release of the first two Humble Pie albums on Nice Records there has been renewed interest in the group. The band was formed in early 1969 when Steve Marriott, having walked out on the Small Faces, joined with Peter Frampton and Jerry Shirley then recommended Greg Ridley from Spooky Tooth. No wanting to be defined a "supergroup" they chose the name Humble Pie.

As with other titles in the On Track series, this volume looks at the recorded works of Humble Pie, album by album, track by track. This is set within the context of the band's evolution. While this is not a full biography, an understanding of the development of the band is crucial to understand how the music evolved. At first, Humble Pie may have had two well-known musicians but the group was very much a meeting of equals. All four members contributed to the songwriting and vocals were also shared. However, this started to change with the departure of Peter Frampton just after Live at the Fillmore was recorded. The very capable Clem Clempson was an excellent replacement from this point Humble Pie became more Steve Marriott's band. Up to his death, Marriott was the key driver of Humble Pie and he started to bring in more of his soul inspiration such as the Blackberries on backing vocals.

The books is ideal not just for those who are long-time Humble Pie fans but also for those newer to the music who can learn about the stories behind the songs. It is an easy read so a great accompaniment to listening to the albums.
