Charlie is My Darling - The Rolling Stones

ABKO

Released: November 2012

This film was shot by Peter Whitehead during the Stones' first tour of Ireland in 1965. It has never previously been released and, with the Rolling Stones celebrating 50 years, it is an ideal document of the original line-up of the band as they are hitting the big time. The film is a mix of behind the scenes footage including interviews with the band members and live performances. The film has been restored from the original and this has been of particular benefit to the sound quality.

The Stones launch into The Last Time as the stage curtains are pulled back. This is a powerful performance of the band's first number one single. At this time Brian Jones was in fine form with his playing of the trademark riff driving the song forwards. Keith Richards looks like the coolest man on the planet. Further live tracks just about cut through the screams from the girls in the audience but, despite this, they do show just how good the Stones were at the time.

The backstage footage is enlightening with Mick and Keith working on a new song - Sitting on a Fence which was later a single for Twice as Much - as well as Tell Me. A Lennon/McCartney trio follows this: I've Just Seen a Face along with I Feel Fine and Eight Days a Week. Other songs played include Blueberry Hill and the classic Gloria.

Interviews with the band members are particularly interesting 50 years on. They talk about how long the band might last and what alternative careers they could have. The boredom of touring is also evident.

The film includes live performances of the following songs:

  1. The Last Time
  2. Time is on My Side
  3. I'm Alright
  4. Everybody Needs Somebody to Love
  5. Pain in my Heart
  6. Around and Around
  7. (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction

This is a great DVD of one the greatest bands ever. The boredom of touring, the excitement of the fans, the band's uncertainty about their future and great music too.
