Stewart grew up in the Dorset town of Wimborne. He had played guitar in the Saviours backing local vocalist Tony Blackburn. He developed an interest in folk music which was accentuated when he first heard Bob Dylan. After considering forming a band with Greg Lake and Lee Kerslake, he moved to London in 1965, got a gig in a coffee bar and started to share a flat with Paul Simon. When Simon's success meaning he returned to the US, Stewart looked to take over some of his club spots.
